Mathematics – Primary School
The Primary School mathematics curriculum has at its core Singapore Math, a program. Supplementary materials are used to enhance the program and provide greater reinforcement of basic arithmetic skills.
Understanding mathematical concepts and building on them from the earliest junior kindergarten allows the curriculum to flow logically and sequentially to deeper mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding as students mature. In the Primary School, the process of problem solving is as important as the correct answer. Writing about and discussing a problem and its solution is an essential learning skill, and empowers children to think mathematically.
Through daily math lessons in the classroom, teachers emphasize basic operations for solving everyday problems, as well as help students investigate more advanced calculations in algebraic and statistical settings. Access to the lower school math lab, extension materials in the classroom, math competitions and enrichment math classes at some grade levels gives students more opportunities to extend their learning and nourish their mathematical curiosity.
